Zoe Saldana was born on June 19, 1978, in Passaic, New Jersey, to Asalia Nazario and Aridio Saldana. Her father was Dominican and her mother Puerto Rican. Her family was raised by her mother in Queens. As she reached the age of 10, she and her parents relocated to the Dominican Republic. They lived in the Dominican Republic for seven more years. Zoe discovered a keen interest in performing dances while living abroad. She began her training at ECOS Espacio de Danza Dance Academy to study ballet as well as many different dance styles.
